The Brief

KUNU STUDIO collaborated with West Midlands Police to create a comprehensive communication strategy aimed at improving safety within Coventry’s night-time economy.

This involved conceptualising a platform, ‘Beacon,’ to empower bystanders to report incidents in real-time, along with a social media strategy and physical marketing materials to raise awareness and drive engagement.

Proposed solution

The proposal for West Midlands Police aimed to tackle key safety challenges within Coventry’s night-time economy, particularly focusing on reducing sexual assault and anti-social behaviour. The approach centred around increasing up-stander intervention by encouraging bystanders to act in real-time through a mobile app, Beacon, which allowed users to discreetly report incidents directly to venue security and law enforcement.

Improving communication channels between upstanders, venue owners, and the police was a critical element, ensuring swift responses to incidents. The proposal also included a robust awareness campaign, leveraging social media, influencer partnerships, and paid advertisements to spread the safety message and drive engagement with the Beacon app.

To enhance visibility, physical marketing materials like wristbands and stickers were distributed in popular nightlife venues, creating both a digital and physical presence to encourage app usage and promote public safety.
